Inside the home of the Singapore architect who built a love letter to his wife
Award-winning architect Edmund Ng, renowned for his visionary all the same timeless work, takes us on a tour of a contempo projection: His ain dwelling house with gallerist Jazz Chong.

"Spaces that evoke emotion and spirituality – I think that's what good architecture is all about," said architect Edmund Ng, main of Edmund Ng Architects. His clean designs and creative sensibilities tin be seen in projects built in Singapore and abroad.
Recently, Ng took on a projection of particular significance – his own habitation. Using the narrow width of the state plot to his advantage, Ng deconstructed rooms and integrated functions to create a unique space.
"It's a business firm that is my work of art," said Ng, an fine art lover who has been married for seven years to Jazz Chong, an fine art collector and founder of gallery Ode to Fine art. "Of course, it'south an extension of ourselves. Interestingly, there was no discussion [with my wife] about how the house should look like."
Thankfully, his wife'southward initial reaction to the space was a favourable 1. "When she beginning walked through the door, I could come across a big smile on her face up. And that's the all-time reward that any builder building their own dwelling tin can get. Information technology fell into identify, and everyone's comfy," he said.
Ng embraces a Japanese design philosophy called wabi-sabi. "It means to celebrate imperfection as a class of beauty," he explained.
The bungalow features an austere facade that belies a warm, inviting interior designed to showcase their common obsession, art.
As such, the home'south basement features an in-house fine art gallery that displays his married woman'due south extensive contemporary art collection, which features an eclectic mix of paintings and sculptures. The gallery walls are made of off-white-faced concrete, which Ng considers "the most perfect sheet whereby anything tin can exist hung, removed, with smash marks that are not patched up, and information technology's still a form of natural beauty".
Unusually, the living room does non feature any large glass windows or sliding doors; instead, the just views come up from ii tiny slits of glass inside a large concrete block which resembles a bunker. "It'southward a curated decision," explained Ng, "We wanted to frame the view, to look into a curated landscape of trees beingness planted. And so this is an in-looking sort of architecture."
He considers the dining room ane of the most of import spaces in his home.
"Dining is e'er 1 of the principal activities in the house, and we do entertain quite a fair flake, so information technology has to exist the primary focus of the firm," explained Ng, who enjoys cooking up a tempest, and co-hosting large parties, with his wife. Elsewhere in the house, standout features include a staircase composed of floating concrete slabs, a about unusual walk-in wardrobe, a master sleeping room that sprawls across i,000 sq. ft., and a painting of his wife hanging above the bathtub, which Ng calls "his ain Mona Lisa".
All in, this architectural ode to honey is a home that speaks of a couple in sync with each other.
